Vaginal Burning
Burning in the vaginal area has a genuinely long list of possible causes, spanning everything from a new soap to a handful of STDs — which makes this one where testing tends to answer the question faster than trying to self-diagnose from symptoms alone.
The most common non-STD causes
Yeast infections are probably the single most common cause of vaginal burning and itching, often with a thick, white discharge. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) can also cause burning, typically alongside a thin, grayish discharge with a distinct odor. A urinary tract infection can cause burning specifically during urination that's sometimes mistaken for vaginal burning generally. Irritation from soap, spermicide, or certain fabrics is common too, and usually resolves once the irritant is removed.
The STDs that cause it
Chlamydia and gonorrhea can both cause burning, sometimes alongside unusual discharge, though a large share of infections cause no symptoms at all. Trichomoniasis, a common parasitic STD that's tested for less by default than chlamydia and gonorrhea, frequently causes burning along with itching and a distinct discharge. Genital herpes can cause burning specifically around active or emerging sores.
When It's Worth Testing
Burning that doesn't match a yeast infection you've had before, that persists despite over-the-counter treatment, or that comes with unusual discharge or after unprotected sex is worth an STD test rather than repeated guessing.
