Itchy or Burning Urethra
An itchy or burning sensation at the tip of the urethra — where it stings a bit to pee, or there's a persistent itch that's hard to ignore — is one of the more reliable early signals that something's worth testing for, simply because there are fewer harmless explanations for it than for, say, a skin bump.
The two usual suspects
Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common causes of urethral irritation from an STD. Gonorrhea tends to cause more obvious symptoms — burning during urination, a thick discharge — usually within a week or two of exposure. Chlamydia is quieter; a lot of people have mild or no symptoms at all, which is part of why it's one of the most commonly under-diagnosed STDs. When it does cause symptoms, they look a lot like a milder version of gonorrhea: some itching or burning, maybe a thin discharge.
Trichomoniasis and mycoplasma genitalium can cause similar urethral irritation and are less commonly tested for by default, which is why a broader panel (rather than just a chlamydia/gonorrhea test) is worth considering if symptoms don't clear up after treatment for the more common two.
Non-STD causes worth ruling out too
A urinary tract infection can cause very similar burning, especially in people with a vagina, and is unrelated to sexual activity. Irritation from soap, spermicide, or friction can also cause temporary discomfort that resolves once the irritant is removed. The distinguishing factor is usually persistence: irritation from a product tends to fade within a day or two once you stop using it, while an infection tends to stick around or get worse.
When It's Worth Testing
Persistent burning or itching at the urethral opening, especially with any discharge, is worth testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea specifically — both are common, both are easily treated once identified, and symptoms alone can't reliably distinguish between the two or from a UTI.
