What Happens If You Leave an STD Untreated?
This isn't meant to be alarmist — most STDs are genuinely manageable, and many are curable outright, when they're actually caught and treated. But it's worth being honest about what "untreated" can mean over time, since that's the actual argument for testing rather than waiting things out.
What can happen with specific untreated infections
Untreated chlamydia or gonorrhea can progress to pelvic inflammatory disease in women, raising the risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancy, and can cause epididymitis in men, which can also affect fertility in some cases. Untreated syphilis progresses through stages and, left untreated for years, can eventually cause serious damage to the heart, brain, and nervous system. Untreated HIV progressively weakens the immune system, eventually leading to AIDS, where the body becomes vulnerable to infections it would normally fight off easily.
The more reassuring flip side
Nearly all of this is preventable with reasonably prompt testing and treatment. Bacterial STDs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis) are curable with antibiotics. HIV, while not curable, is highly manageable with modern treatment — effective treatment can reduce viral load to undetectable levels, which also essentially eliminates transmission risk to partners. The serious outcomes described above are what happens specifically when an infection goes unaddressed for a long time, not an inevitable outcome of having an STD.
