Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Signs to Know
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the reproductive organs, most often resulting from untreated chlamydia or gonorrhea that spreads upward from the cervix. It's a genuinely serious complication worth recognizing early.
Warning signs
Lower abdominal or pelvic pain is the most common symptom, ranging from mild to severe. Other signs include fever, unusual vaginal discharge, pain during sex, irregular bleeding, and pain during urination. Some cases, unfortunately, cause mild or no symptoms at all, which is part of why PID sometimes isn't caught until complications develop.
Why prompt treatment matters so much
Untreated PID can cause scarring in the fallopian tubes, which raises the risk of infertility and ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus, which is a medical emergency) — and this risk increases with each subsequent episode. It's treatable with antibiotics, and the earlier it's caught, the better the odds of avoiding lasting reproductive damage.
When It's Worth Testing
Pelvic pain, especially with fever, unusual discharge, or pain during sex, warrants prompt medical evaluation — not just an STD test, but a same-week doctor visit, since PID needs clinical diagnosis and treatment beyond what a home test alone provides.
