Can STDs Cause Back Pain?
Back pain isn't a typical, direct STD symptom on its own, but a couple of genuine connections exist, mostly through specific complications rather than the infections themselves.
The actual connections
Pelvic inflammatory disease, a complication of untreated chlamydia or gonorrhea, can cause lower back pain alongside its more typical pelvic pain and other symptoms. Reactive arthritis, a less common complication that can follow a chlamydia infection, causes joint inflammation that can include the lower back and sacroiliac joints, alongside eye and urinary symptoms in the classic presentation.
Why back pain alone usually points elsewhere
Isolated back pain, without other symptoms like pelvic pain, unusual discharge, fever, or joint swelling elsewhere, is far more likely to have a completely unrelated cause — muscular strain, posture, or an unrelated medical issue. The STD connection here matters mainly as one possibility to consider if back pain shows up alongside other, more classic STD-related symptoms, not as a standalone concern.
