STDs: A Complete List and Quick Reference
A quick reference list of the major sexually transmitted infections, grouped by type, for anyone trying to get oriented before digging into any one of them in more detail.
Bacterial STDs (curable with antibiotics)
Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and chancroid (less common in the US than the others). Trichomoniasis is technically caused by a parasite rather than a bacteria, but is grouped here practically since it's also curable with a single antibiotic course. Ureaplasma and mycoplasma genitalium are also bacterial and, in some cases, sexually transmitted, though they're not always included in standard panels.
Viral STDs (manageable, not curable)
HIV, genital herpes (HSV-2, and sometimes HSV-1), and HPV are the major viral STDs. Hepatitis B and C can also be sexually transmitted, alongside other transmission routes like blood exposure. Each of these stays in the body long-term and is managed with treatment rather than cured, though HPV often clears on its own for many people.
Parasitic and other
Pubic lice ("crabs") and scabies are both spread through close physical contact, including sexual contact, though they're parasitic infestations rather than infections in the strict sense.
