High-Risk vs. Low-Risk Types
HPV types are grouped by risk level. Low-risk types (like HPV 6 and 11) are responsible for most genital warts. High-risk types (notably HPV 16 and 18) cause roughly 70% of cervical cancers and are linked to anal, penile, vaginal, vulvar, and oropharyngeal (throat) cancers as well.
Symptoms
Most HPV infections cause no symptoms at all and clear within one to two years on their own. When symptoms do appear, they're usually genital warts — flesh-colored, sometimes cauliflower-like bumps that grow gradually. High-risk types typically cause no visible symptoms and are found through cervical screening instead.
Testing & Diagnosis
There's no routine HPV test for men. For women, high-risk HPV is monitored through pap smears and HPV co-testing, not a standard STD panel — worth knowing since this is a common source of confusion. Genital warts are typically diagnosed by visual exam.
The HPV Vaccine
The vaccine protects against the HPV types most likely to cause cancer and genital warts. It works best when given before someone becomes sexually active — routinely recommended around ages 9–12 — but it's approved and can still offer protection for adults up to age 45. Decades of safety monitoring in millions of people have found no serious safety concerns beyond typical injection-site soreness.
If Left Untreated
There's no treatment for the virus itself, only for what it causes — warts can be treated, and precancerous cervical changes found on a pap smear can be monitored or treated before they progress. This is exactly why routine cervical screening matters: cervical cancer from HPV can take 20+ years to develop, giving screening a long window to catch it early.
