Can You Get an STD From Kissing?
Mostly no — but "mostly" is doing some work in that sentence, and the exceptions are common enough to be worth knowing about.
What Doesn't Spread Through Saliva
HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea don't meaningfully transmit through saliva or ordinary kissing. HIV in particular requires a specific route — blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk — and saliva doesn't carry a viral load anywhere close to what's needed for transmission, even in the rare cases where trace amounts of blood are present from something like a cut in the mouth. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can infect the throat (usually through oral sex, not kissing), but casual kissing isn't a recognized transmission route for either.
The Real Exception: Oral Herpes
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) — the type most commonly responsible for cold sores — spreads through direct skin and mucous membrane contact, and kissing is one of its most common transmission routes. It's especially transmissible when a cold sore is active or about to appear, but it can also spread when no visible sore is present, through a process called asymptomatic shedding. This is part of why HSV-1 is so widespread — a large share of adults carry it, often from childhood, well before it has anything to do with sexual contact at all.
Syphilis, In Specific Circumstances
Syphilis can transmit through kissing, but only if an active sore (a chancre, in the primary stage, or mucous patches in the secondary stage) happens to be present in or around the mouth. This is a much narrower scenario than herpes — it requires an active lesion to be involved, not just contact in general — but it's the reason syphilis isn't a flat "no" the way HIV and the bacterial STDs are.
Mono Doesn't Belong on This List
Mononucleosis, caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, gets nicknamed "the kissing disease" for the obvious reason — it does spread through saliva — but it isn't classified as a sexually transmitted infection. It's simply a virus that happens to spread through close contact, including kissing, much the same way a cold does.
