Jock Itch or an STD?

Jock itch (tinea cruris) is a fungal infection, not an STD, and it's genuinely one of the more common things mistaken for one, simply because it shows up in the same general area and causes discomfort that feels alarming if you don't know what it is.

What jock itch actually looks like

Jock itch typically causes a red, itchy rash with a well-defined, often slightly raised border, usually in the groin fold rather than directly on the genitals themselves. It thrives in warm, damp conditions — sweat, tight clothing, shared gym equipment — and is caused by the same type of fungus responsible for athlete's foot (which is, incidentally, a common source of self-transmission if you dry your feet before your groin with the same towel).

Why it gets confused with an STD

The itching, redness, and general discomfort overlap enough with some STD symptoms that the confusion is understandable — but jock itch stays confined to the groin fold and inner thighs rather than affecting the genitals directly, doesn't cause discharge, and responds to standard antifungal cream within one to two weeks. An STD-related rash or irritation typically doesn't respond to antifungal treatment at all, which is itself a useful signal if you've already tried it.

When It's Worth Testing

If a groin rash doesn't improve with over-the-counter antifungal cream after about two weeks, or if it's accompanied by discharge, sores, or genital (not just groin-fold) involvement, it's worth testing rather than continuing antifungal treatment.
