Do Certain Foods Trigger Herpes Outbreaks?

A fair number of people who live with herpes report that certain foods seem to coincide with outbreaks — most commonly foods high in the amino acid arginine. The evidence behind this is genuinely limited, but the theory itself is at least biologically plausible, which is more than can be said for a lot of diet-related health claims.

The arginine/lysine theory

The herpes virus needs arginine, an amino acid, to replicate. Lysine, a different amino acid, is thought to compete with arginine for absorption in the body. The theory — not conclusively proven, but plausible — is that a diet higher in arginine relative to lysine might make outbreaks somewhat more likely for some people, while the reverse ratio might help suppress them.

Foods sometimes flagged as higher in arginine include chocolate, nuts, seeds, and gelatin. Foods higher in lysine include most dairy, fish, and chicken. It's worth being honest that clinical evidence for dietary arginine/lysine ratios meaningfully affecting outbreak frequency is thin and mixed — some small studies support a modest effect, others don't find much at all.

What actually has stronger evidence behind it

Stress, illness, sun exposure (for oral herpes specifically), menstruation, and general immune suppression have more consistent evidence as outbreak triggers than any specific food. If you're trying to manage outbreak frequency, those factors are probably worth paying closer attention to than diet alone — though there's no harm in noticing your own patterns with food if that's something you've observed personally.
