Can You Get an STD From a Pool or Hot Tub?

STDs require fairly direct contact — skin-to-skin, mucous membrane contact, or fluid exchange — to transmit, and chlorinated water actively works against the survival of the bacteria and viruses responsible for these infections. Even setting the chlorine aside, the sheer volume of water in a pool dilutes any trace amount of bodily fluid to a level that doesn't come close to what's needed for transmission.

The realistic risk at a pool or hot tub isn't the water — it's the same direct skin-to-skin contact that transmits STDs anywhere else, which can obviously still happen at a pool the same as it can anywhere. The water itself isn't the vector; ordinary physical contact between people is, exactly as it would be outside a pool setting.
