Can an STD Cause a Headache?
A headache on its own is a poor indicator of an STD — it's one of the most common, nonspecific symptoms there is. It becomes more relevant in a couple of specific contexts, worth understanding rather than treating every headache as a concern.
When it fits a broader pattern
A headache alongside fever, fatigue, sore throat, and swollen glands, appearing two to four weeks after a specific exposure, fits the flu-like acute phase some people experience with early HIV infection — the headache itself isn't the signal, the overall pattern and timing is.
The rarer, more serious context
A severe headache with neck stiffness, fever, and sensitivity to light is a different, more urgent situation — a possible sign of herpes meningitis (rare) or, more urgently, other forms of meningitis that need emergency evaluation regardless of cause. This specific combination, not an ordinary headache, is what warrants immediate medical attention.
